Luminary Basics 2-day workshops

Get ready to light the night with your own amazing, luminescent creation! Learn how to frame and paper a luminary star, crystal, or other shapes that inspire you. We'll also discuss mounting and lighting options.
Participants must attend both days. Keep in mind that projects can take longer than the scheduled workshop hours, depending on project complexity. Materials and tools will be available, but if you choose to take on a more complex form, costs may increase. Children 12 and under must have an adult to work with them. Luminary
Luminaries made in the studio are constructed from reed-like cane and paper using white glue as a bonding material. You may choose to use an existing template or create your own design. Projects usually take 2-3 days (10-20 hours) to make, so make plans to return to the studio to complete your piece during open studio hours after your workshop. Materials and tools will be available. Ready to expand your luminary skills?
Are you drawn to the elegant geometry of crystalline forms? Or how about the other-worldly, awesome face of a leaf-nosed bat? Let your imagination glow and count on spending a substantial amount of time creating a piece that will dazzle you for years to come. If crystals or bats don't inspire you, there are plenty of other great forms to consider making Hummingbirds, doves, fish anyone? Calibrate your expectations. These are beautiful but complex forms. Plan to spend more time after the class to finish your piece (open studio times will be posted during the workshop). Want to get more involved with making the Procession happen? Well, you are most certainly welcome! One our most favorite activities, BATIK is expanding in popularity and we need more staff to help to keep the wax and colors flowing! By taking this training, you are not committing yourself to long hours of volunteer drudgery but beware, you won't escape the excitement!
Getting Started with Papier Mache!

Roll up your sleeves and get into the goopy fun of papier-mache. Bring your own project idea or simply pitch-in on a work in progress. Either way, we are experts at getting you started! Come once, twice, or arrange a time for your special group. Wear your old clothes!
Dancing (Bicycle?) Bees!

Learn how to create your own bee costume smock and join a hive of buzzing, dancing bees. Create your look during the March workshops and perfect the Bee Dance during April! The intersections will be abuzz with your performance come Procession Day. Tag-Board Totem Tuesdays!

Parents! Easy headdresses for you and your family to construct and wear in one session. Come as a herd, a flock or a pride! Fashioned from tag-board, this Central American art form allows you to create a headdress as elaborate or as simple as you like. Perfect wear for drumming in a band!
Windswept Spangles Wednesdays!

One of the Procession's most sought after souvenirs, this celebration art form is older than cardboard itself! Glittered, beribboned and suspended high on bamboo poles, these spangles are cut from cardboard templates using the shapes and forms of nature - from lotus to orca - as your canvas!
Make your own Drum Bucket!!!
Every Wednesday -- 5:30-6:30 PM

At the Procession Art Studio
Dont have a drum? Learn to sand down a 5-gallon bucket then use clever design techniques to create your own personal flair. And when it is all said and done, youll be knocking down rhythms with the best of them! Excellent for any Procession band! And if you would like to try it out, head right on over with Scott Bishop to Drum Fun from 7-9pm.
Wildlife Windsocks Thursdays!
Every Thursday -- 6:30-8:30pm

Still haven't learned how to make one of the icons of the Procession a wildlife batik windsock? Then Thursdays are reserved for you! Learn batik techniques and get all the construction details to fly your windsock through the streets. And remember, you are always welcome to create a panel for a community windsock as well as your own!
Quaking Aspen Windsock Grove!
March 27/April 3 (Sundays) -- Noon-2:00pm

Learn how to batik your own windsock and smock and transform yourself into a quaking aspen tree. Held aloft on tall bamboo poles, this workshop is designing a grove of 25 windsocks for a thrilling aerial display - complete with choreography!
Gargantuan Pageant Designs!

It's your artistic vision and you want it to be huge! But how? Bring your creative notions to the art studio and this workshop will help direct you toward creating your giant pageant masterpiece in the lightest way possible
Horns & Beaks for Masks
March 30/April 6 (Weds) -- 6:30-8:30 PM

Once you have constructed your basic mask base, impress yourself by learning to carve, fashion and attach lightweight horns and beaks with rigid foam. Once you've done it, you won't leave home without it!
Giant Fabric Flowers!?
March 30/April 6 (Weds) 6:30-9:00pm
April 10 (Sunday) 2:00-5:00pm

Learn techniques for making GIANT fabric and wire flowers to wear or carry, using recycled formal dresses and other recycled materials. No sewing necessary! Bring detailed pictures of your favorite flowers. Simple petals are best. Plan on taking multiple sessions to complete your creation. Batik Butterfly & Woodland Wings
April 2/9 (Saturdays) -- 1:00-4:00 PM

Spin out of your winter cocoon and become the iridescent pollinator you know you are! Or maybe the soaring curve of woodland wings is more your style! In one day you'll bend wire frames, design and begin batiking your cloth wings. Plan 23 days to complete your wings and attach wings to wire frame.
Giant Flying Cranes!?
April 2 (Saturday) -- 1:00-5:00pm

Startle yourself by learning how to make Bread & Puppet-style giant flying birds out of bamboo, sheets, bicycle tire tubes, and cardboard. Each bird requires three people to fly it, so bring friends! Class is appropriate for ages 9 and older..
Elephant helmet heads!

Winter weather leaving you with a few old bicycle helmets kicking around? Then come graze the studio savannah and turn your helmet into an elephant head with elegant trunk and large flapping ears. A great project for the entire herd, designs include breast plates too!
Fabulous Feathered Masks!
April 3/10 (Sunday) -- Noon-3:00pm
Under 12 w/adult -- $5 -- Ann Pelo
Enjoy the world from behind a mask of feathery delight. Use plaster gauze to mold your facemask and then use the mold to form another papier-mache mask and build from there. Allow nature to inspire you with creative embellishments of feathers, fur, papier-mache.
Excellent for Beaks & Horns Workshop. Bring headband or scarf to tie hair back.

Calling all amphibians! Come and express your rough-skinned self by learning to make a helmet-style mask that can be made into any amphibian species. You will learn all the steps necessary to complete your papier-mache frog-head in one night, but plan 3-4 days to finish.
